What is a Spiritual Director?

A spiritual director comes along side as you grow in faith and tend to the needs of your soul. They help you create a set-apart space and time in which God by His Spirit can meet you and do His work. This supportive, grace-filled relationship offers you the opportunity to:

  • dive deeper into prayer and draw closer to God

  • discover God’s care in the midst of difficulties

  • become aware of the sacred within the ordinary events of life

  • honestly share with God your feelings, doubts and questions

What Happens in a Spiritual Direction Session?

Spiritual Direction is the opportunity to reflect with a qualified spiritual director about your life, its events, relationships with God and others. Spiritual direction is a graced way of serving another believer — helping the other to grow in intimacy with God. The focus of a spiritual direction relationship is the directee’s experience of God. The director helps the person to notice God’s movement in prayer and in the circumstances and events of one’s life. The true “director” in this relationship is God. The spiritual director is simply the guide.

Spiritual direction presumes that God communicates through ordinary human experience, and in that experience is found God’s invitations, urgings and confirmations. A spiritual director is a companion on life’s journey — asking reflective questions and pointing out resources. They assist with resistances and roadblocks, helping the directee to come to breakthroughs in their relationship with God.

Each session will last approximately an hour. The spiritual director will begin and end with prayer. The directee can then bring whatever challenges, concerns, experiences from their life they would like to discuss. The spiritual director will listen and provide guidance and awareness of the evidence of God’s work in the life of the directee. Frequency of sessions can be discussed with the director and decided upon according to individual needs. Many people find once a month helpful.

Both Gail and Joan will be offering spiritual direction sessions at their retreats on a first-come first-serve basis. They also meet with people privately outside of retreat dates. If you would like to schedule a spiritual direction session with one of them, email info@mylifeissacred.com for more information.
